Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 SM-T719 Flash Lineage OS 15.1 Android 8.1 Oreo

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 is one of the better tablet available Android market. If you do have one yourself, flash it to Lineage OS 15.1 to realize it's potential.

This will be a step by step guides to install Lineage OS 15.1 to your Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0. Enjoy!

1. Unlock Tablet

  • Enable Developer Options. Go to Settings -> About tablet -> Tap on build number for 7 times.
  • Go to Developer Options -> Enable OEM Unlock and USB debugging.
  • Boot the device into Download mode ( Home + Volume Down + Power ). Accept the disclaimer then insert the USB cable to the device.
  • Download the Heimdall Suite.
  • Extract the Heimdall suite and take note of the directory containing heimdall.exe. You can verify Heimdall is working by opening a command prompt in that directory and typing heimdall version. If you receive an error, make sure you have the Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable Package (x86) installed on your computer.
  • Run zadig.exe from the Drivers folder in the Heimdall Suite. Choose Options -> List all devices.
  • Select  Samsung USB Composite Device or MSMxxxx or Gadget Serial or Device Name from the drop down menu. (If nothing relevant appears, try uninstalling any Samsung related Windows software, like Samsung Windows drivers and/or Kies).
  • Click Replace Driver (having to select Install Driver from the drop down list built into the button).
  • If you are prompted with a warning that the installer is unable to verify the publisher of the driver, select Install this driver anyway. You may receive two more prompts about security. Select the options that allow you to carry on.
  • Once that is done then you can launch a command prompt.
  • Run this command heimdall print-pit.
  • If you encounter error with it you can try to download the newer version of Heimdall that I compile myself. Just replace the exe file on the original extracted folder.
  • Run the command again and if you device reboot then you are done.

2. Install Custom Recovery

  • Download TWRP Recovery.
  • Power off the your device and connect the USB adapter to the computer. (Don’t connect the device first)
  • Boot the device into Download mode - Home + Volume Down + Power. Accept the disclaimer then insert the USB cable to the device.
  • Launch the command prompt and go to your Heimdall directory. You can copy the downloaded TWRP image into the Heimdall directory.
  • Run this command heimdall flash --RECOVERY twrp-x.x.x-x-gts28vewifi.img --no-reboot. Please replace the x.x.x.x with the actual name of your download twrp image.
  • A blue transfer bar will appear on the device showing the recovery being transferred.
  • Unplug the USB cable from your device.=
  • Reboot into recovery. Home + Volume Up + Power. This part is tricky you first need to long press the power to restart the device. When the device turns off quickly press on Home + Volume Up + Power to boot into recovery. If the device get rebooted it might overwrite the recovery.

3. Install Lineage OS 15.1 Android 8.1 Oreo

  • Make sure you have ADB installed. (Minimal ADB and Fastboot
  • Download the Lineage OS 15.1.
  • Optionally you can download Gapps. I would normally download the least item the choice is yours. Personally this one I will setup it with Gapps just a bare tablet without Google Services.
  • You can have options to run a Backup but make sure the back is created on external SD or get transferred out as your internal storage will get wiped.
  • Go to the Main Menu - Tap on Wipe.
  • Now tap Format Data and continue with the formatting process. This will remove encryption as well as delete all files stored on the internal storage.
  • Return to the previous menu and tap Advanced Wipe.
  • Select the Cache and System partitions to be wiped and then Swipe to Wipe.
  • Connect your device to the computer.
  • Launch the command prompt and navigate to the directory you downloaded the image.
  • Run adb push <filename.zip>  /sdcard/
  • You can do the same with the gapps zip file if you want to do the gapps flash.
  • Go back to return to main menu, then tap Install.
  • Navigate to /sdcard, and select the lineageos zip package.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts to install the package.
  • If you want Gapps just follow the same steps and flash the gapps zip file. Reminder this needs to be done now before you boot into android.
  • Once installation has finished, return to the main menu, tap Reboot, and then System.
  • Now you have Lineage OS 15.1 running on your Samsung Galaxy Tab S2.

  1. For the print-pit command, I got an error: failed to retrieve config descriptor. Can you give me a hand?
